Luba Gurdjieff

A Memoir with Recipes

by Luba Gurdjieff Everitt

with Marina C. Bear

This is the memoir of a remarkable woman. Luba's memoir is as irrepressible, and as unexpected, as her life. Told with laughter in her voice and a glimmer in her eye, it reveals the extraordinary spirit, and all the recipes, that made luba so beloved.

As a child, Luba Gurdjieff fled revolutionary Russia with her family for the refuge of her uncle G. I. Gurdjieff's spiritual school in France. Luba was raised amid artists, intellectuals, and politicians, such as Katherine Mansfield, Bertrand Russell, and Franklin Roosevelt, who came seeking her uncle's insights to the riches of Eastern wisdom.

Here is an intimate glimpse into this fascinating household. At the Prieure, Luba also learned the secrets of the kitchen for which she was adored. As owner of Luba's bistro, a landmark in London for over three decades, she served everyone from starving artists to royalty with her generous heart and hearty fare.

Luba Gurdjieff Everitt still lives in England with her husband, Arthur. There she told her story to Marina C. Bear, a longtime student and teacher of the Gurdjieff ideas, who lives in Berkeley, California.
