THE DROLL TROLL

A View From Under the Bridge

One hundred illustrated articles on contemporary life in America

Tom McCann

Illustrated by Phil Frank

Winner 1995 Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Humor book

This compilation of exactly-100-word satirical essays casts a whimsical eye on the American scene and the human condition in general. The pieces are grouped into five sections loosely arranged by topic, including: Citizen Troll (or "Grouching Toward a More Perfect Union"), Trolling in Troubled Waters, and The Troll at Large. At heart, the Droll Troll (the voice behind these mini-colunms) is a lovable grump who delights in exposing hypocrisy, corruption, and stupidity. Each page has an original illustration by comic-strip artist Phil Frank.

Tom McCann, a business journalist from Peteluma, California, died in the spring of 1995. He had the following comments about himself as the Droll Troll.

"Supposedly, one should not pass up an opportunity for an ego trip, on which to flaunt his baggage tags. But I have resisted that temptation, not out of modesty, but because I don't consider my biography necessarily relevant. Humph!

If curious, the close reader will discern certain inescapable components of my profile. It is obvious that I am a middle-aged, middle-class, American male, with family, who follows current events and has some minimal awareness of history, literature and law. It should be equally apparent that I am not a Nobel laureate nor scholar on the cutting edge of anything, except my crummy lawn."

Phil Frank is the creator of the insightful and topical comic strip "Farley," which appears in the San Francisco Chronicle. He has given us not only Farley but the memorable Guru Baba-re-bok, Bruce the Raven and Orwell, the white house cat. He lives in Sausalito, California
